Referred to as P.P.E. for short, this is one of the oldest Clematis cultivars and a winner of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. And it's no wonder-P.P.E. is large, grows quickly, and is incredibly floriferous all summer long. P.P.E. is great for those just starting out with Clematis, as it's durable and easy to maintain. The small-to-medium blooms are fully double, with recurved and twisted sepals that resemble rosettes. When the sepals drop, the resulting pompon center can remain for weeks. It was bred in the 19th century by renowned French Clematis breeder Francis Morel. Clematis viticella 'Purpurea Plena Elegans' In our EZ Pruning Guide, this variety is in the GREEN pruning category. These Clematis bloom on new vines that emerge from the ground each year or stems from near the bottom of older vines. Prune hard in the spring and as often as you like to encourage reblooming and keep the plant as tidy as you like.
